About us
The station opened on 31st March 1862. Due to the steep sided bank on the platform side, the station buildings were built on the opposite side to the platform and included the main station building, a goods shed and storeroom. A cattle dock was also built, (which has now been lovingly restored) and latterly, a camping coach was situated in the siding.
In 1971, the line from Taunton to Minehead closed but that wasn’t the end for the tiny station. By 1978, Stogumber reopened as part of the West Somerset Railway and over 40 years later is thriving, thanks to the efforts of FOSS members.
We would love you to join us. Just paying your membership fee helps us financially but if you want to do more, you can join our team of volunteers. There are many different tasks to be performed, from station duties or helping in the kitchen, to maintaining and improving the fabric of the station, such as building maintenance, painting etc, or helping our cutting back team keep Mother Nature at bay. Our gardener too, probably wouldn’t mind a helping hand!
